Background

ArcelorMittal is the world's number one steel company, with over 326,000 employees in more than 60 countries. It has led the consolidation of the world steel industry and today ranks as the only truly global steelmaker.
Problem
For its factories in Belgium, ArcelorMittal is using an existing system to manage the procedure for maintaining the machines in production lines. The existing system developed in 2002 by the IAM department --Internal Automation & Measurement-- no longer met the current needs.

Solution

Thebe Technology developed a safe workflow system to access the production environment, and to manage the state of the machine so as to ensure that all machines are put to safe conditions before they are approached by any worker. The application also seeks to minimize the down-time of the machines. Reports allow monitoring the progress, and spotting occurring problems instantaneously.
Since the solution is mission-critical , there is no room for failure or inconsistencies, since this can result in injuries or even worse to workers in the production environment.
The solution can be accessed by both internal employees in Arcelor, and also maintenance companies representatives who are responsible for maintenance operations of production machines.

Technology

The solution has 3-Tier architecture, consisting of a smart client, a middle-tier, and a SQL-Server 2005 Database repository. With the middle-tier in place, all operations or changes to the states of the machines can be traced and logged for auditing purposes.
The smart-client interface gives the end user the ability to access a wide range of operations and reporting services.
Its architecture is based on web-services in the communication layer, and adapts SOA. The system integrates with SAP to exchange information related to employees and workers.

Process

Thebe Technology’s CAS© process in-place combines the benefits of CMMI, Agile development, and Scrum.
The customer is directly involved with the nearshore team on a daily through Thebe’s excellent communication platform.

This project has been done under partnership with Elmos Solutions.
